I’m just going to start out by saying that if you aren’t using Target’s Cartwheel app to shop at Target, then you should be. Seriously, like now. I talk about using the Cartwheel app as a tool for couponing at Target in this post, and how to use the app in this post. However, even more recently Target has sweetened the deal, which brings me to my first perk.
1. Earn Rewards On Everything You Purchase
Update: Starting 8/27/17 the Cartwheel Perks pilot program will be ended. Users will have until 9/27/17 to redeem any perks.
Currently Target is testing this new feature for Cartwheel in select areas (Denver, Houston, San Diego, St. Louis). Luckily it is currently in my area. Don’t fret though because this is expected to be available nationally very soon. But it means you will be able to earn points towards rewards for purchases made in store like a loyalty program. Prior to this change you would only have the cashier scan your cartwheel barcode if you had a deal loaded. However now you should scan your cartwheel barcode at every in store purchase regardless of whether you have a specific cartwheel deal or not.
Essentially you will earn 10 points for every $1 spent in store. Once you reach 5000 points you can cash them in for 1 of any numerous “perks.” Since this feature is new I have not reached the 5000 point threshold yet. But the app currently is showing examples of “perks” that include a free bag of candy, free denim jeans, and free movie, among many others. Plus, when I updated the app to the new version, they gave me a free mini perk. I chose the free Starbucks drink from the in store Starbucks.
Another nice feature is that if you forget the scan your cartwheel barcode at the register, you can still scan the barcode on your receipt with the app and still earn points.
2. Have Access to Additional In Store SaVings
Update: The Cartwheel app will no longer be available starting in September 2017. Instead, Target will be integrating the Cartwheel program into it’s normal Target store app, but all of the features described below will still be available. Stay tuned for a post on the updated Target App.
By having and using the Cartwheel app you can get access to additional in store savings not found anywhere else. These savings can be anywhere from 5%-50% off on top of sale prices (though this typically excludes clearance). For one example, 25% off men’s and women’s sweaters.
You simply add the offer in the app and scan the barcode at the register, and voila, you get the extra savings. To make things even easier, you can use the app to scan items in store and it will show you if there is a cartwheel offer valid for that item. Also, when you first start using the app, you may only save 10 cartwheel offers at at time. By redeeming offers you will unlock badges that will allow you to save even more offers all at once.
Each cartwheel offer may be used 4 times per transaction. This means if you have an offer for 5% off packs of paper towels, you may purchase up to 4 packs of paper towels and receive 5% off each one. Also, you individual barcode may only be scanned 6 times per day allowing for up to 24 uses of the offer in 6 transactions each day.
3. Offers May Be Stacked with Other Coupons
One of the best perks of using the Cartwheel app is that any offers redeemed on a single item may be used in conjunction with 1 manufacturer coupon, 1 Target store coupon, Target REDcard, rebate offers, and gift cards on that same item (I also highly recommend the Target REDcard which you can read more about in this post). This makes the possibility for coupon savings even greater. For reference in calculating any couponing deals, the cartwheel offers are deducted AFTER any Target store coupon and BEFORE a manufacturer coupon within the transaction.
4. Upload Manufacturer Coupons In the App
In addition to the normal in store offers, the Cartwheel app also includes certain manufacturer coupons that can also be added. Just like the other offers, simply add the coupon in the app and it will automatically be deducted when you scan the barcode at the register.
Unlike the normal cartwheel offers, these coupons may only be used once. Despite this, they can come in handy if you are making an emergency run or don’t have enough physical coupons to complete your couponing deal.
5. Scan the App at Self Checkout
I’m not going to lie, I like this one purely for the convenience. When using the Cartwheel app for any purchase it is not necessary to wait in line with your one item and have the barcode scanned by a cashier. Target has made it super easy to use the app in the self check out lane. Simply scan the barcode on your phone with the handheld scanner and you’re good to go! (Not only that but you can now also scan manufacturer and store coupons, redeem gift card promotions from your purchases, and pay with gift cards and REDcard all at the self checkout lane without needing authorization from the attendant! I’ve tried it, and it’s great!)
